For over 40 years Dr. John Leedom walked the halls of LAC/USC. He was generally regarded as the most brilliant clinician many have ever known. He trained thousands of the best physicians in America. His former students, residents and fellows practice in every state.
Dr. Leedom was Chief of Infectious Diesease at LAC/USC at the time the AIDS epidemic began. He became Director of the multidisciplinary AIDS Clinic and the AIDS Service, March, 1985. He had a deep compassion for all patients, especially the poor, and those who suffered so much at the beginning of the epidemic. Under his direction, the AIDS Service, tested many of the drugs which have helped to make HIV a survivable infection.
All this is especially remarkable when one considers that when Dr. Leedom graduated from medical school in 1958 the molecular structure of DNA had just been discovered. Many of the tools we now take for granted like CT scanning and MRI had not been thought of. Also, most of the pharmaceuticals we use today had not been developed. His dedication to life long learning made him the outstanding physician scholar that he was. He was quick to embrace new technology and ideas, as you see him here.
